Before treatment, it helps to understand what the product is intended to improve, what recovery can look like, and how it differs from filler used for facial contouring.
Start with the right goal
Skinvive by Juvéderm is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel approved to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults over age 21.
It is not intended to create the same projection or shape as a volumizing filler. It also should not be expected to lift significant loose skin, correct deep scars, or replace treatment for an underlying skin condition.
During consultation, I assess whether cheek smoothness is the concern we should be targeting—or whether skincare, resurfacing, or another approach would be more appropriate.
What to discuss before treatment
Tell me about your medical conditions, medications, allergies, previous injectables, and any reactions to earlier treatments.
Skinvive has specific contraindications, including certain severe allergies and allergies to ingredients such as lidocaine. Your history needs to be reviewed before deciding whether treatment is suitable.
Mention recent procedures and planned laser treatments or chemical peels. Treating the same area with other procedures can affect timing and the risk of inflammation.
Contact the practice before your appointment if you develop a rash, infection, or significant irritation in the treatment area.
What happens during the appointment?
After the plan and consent are reviewed, the skin is cleansed and prepared. Small amounts of Skinvive are injected as microdroplets within the cheek skin.
You may feel pinching, pressure, or tenderness. Comfort measures and appointment length depend on your individual treatment.
Skinvive is FDA-approved to improve cheek skin smoothness and reduce neck lines in adults over age 21. The neck indication was added in June 2026. Injection placement depends on the area: cheek treatment is intradermal, while neck treatment may be intradermal and/or subdermal. Treatment of other areas falls outside these approved indications.
What can recovery look like?
Redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, firmness, and temporary bumps can occur. The severity and duration vary.
Follow your specific aftercare instructions, including guidance about exercise, heat exposure, makeup, and skincare. Avoid pressing or massaging the treated area unless instructed.
Do not schedule treatment on the assumption that you will have no visible reaction before an important event.
When should you seek help?
Contact your injector immediately for unusual or worsening pain, white or dusky skin, or a spreading mottled appearance.
Vision changes or stroke symptoms require emergency medical attention. Call 911 and notify your injector.
Increasing warmth, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or persistent concerning lumps also need prompt assessment.
When will you notice improvement?
Early swelling is not the treatment result. Allow time for recovery before evaluating skin smoothness.
In clinical studies, Skinvive results lasted six months with optimal treatment. Participants also reported satisfaction with how hydrated, radiant, refreshed, and healthy their skin looked. Individual results vary.
Follow-up and any additional treatment should be based on your response rather than an automatic schedule.
