Kybella Injections in San Jose, CA
Targeted Fat Reduction. No Surgery. Honest Expectations.
Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that permanently destroys fat cells in targeted areas — no surgery, no anesthesia, no incisions. At Modern Aesthetics in San Jose, Kybella is used thoughtfully and selectively, for the right patients and the right areas. That means honest conversations about what it can and can't do, clear expectations about the recovery process, and a provider who will tell you when a different approach is the better answer.
Every Kybella treatment is performed personally by Sheri Rocha, PA-C — a dermatology-trained provider with nearly 9 years of experience who has used Kybella both in its FDA-approved application and off-label for stubborn pockets of fat that other treatments simply can't reach.
What Is Kybella?
Kybella is an injectable formulation of deoxycholic acid — a molecule naturally produced by the body to help break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected into targeted fat deposits, Kybella disrupts fat cell membranes, causing those cells to break down and be permanently cleared by the body's lymphatic system.
Once destroyed, those fat cells are gone for good. They don't regenerate. Maintaining a stable weight helps ensure lasting results, as remaining fat cells in untreated areas can still expand with weight gain.
Kybella is FDA-approved for submental fat reduction — the area commonly known as a double chin. At Modern Aesthetics, it is also used off-label for small, stubborn pockets of fat in other areas of the body where surgical options aren't practical or preferred.
Is Kybella Right for You?
Kybella is not the right answer for everyone — and at Modern Aesthetics, we'll tell you that upfront.
For under-chin fat specifically, Kybella is best suited for small, localized pockets of submental fat in patients with good skin tone and elasticity. For patients with more significant submental fullness or skin laxity concerns, under-chin liposuction is often a more effective, more predictable option — and one we're happy to discuss referrals for. The honest truth is that the aesthetics industry has largely moved in this direction, and we think patients deserve to know that before committing to a Kybella series.
An important consideration: accurately differentiating between treatable fat and the mylohyoid muscle underneath is critical to setting realistic expectations for results. This is an anatomical assessment that requires an experienced eye — and it's something Sheri evaluates carefully during every Kybella consultation.
For skin laxity: removing fat beneath the chin can sometimes reveal loose skin underneath. This is discussed openly during consultation so you understand exactly what to expect from your results.
Where Kybella genuinely shines is in treating small, isolated pockets of fat in areas that can't be addressed by liposuction or other modalities. These off-label uses are where Kybella's precision becomes a real advantage.
Where We Treat
At Modern Aesthetics, Kybella is used for:
FDA-Approved
Submental fat (under the chin / double chin) — for appropriate candidates with small fat pockets and good skin elasticity
Off-Label Uses
Post-treatment fat pockets — patients who have had CoolSculpting or liposuction and are left with an irregular or stubborn remaining pocket of fat
Bra fat — small deposits along the bra line that don't respond to diet or exercise
Back fat — small, localized areas
Stomach — small pockets of fat, including in postpartum patients with localized remaining fullness
Inner thighs — targeted small pockets where surgical options aren't preferred
Off-label use of Kybella is discussed thoroughly during consultation. Sheri will assess whether the area, amount of fat, and your skin quality make you an appropriate candidate.
How It Works
Kybella is administered through a series of small injections precisely mapped to the treatment area. The number of injections per session varies based on the size and location of the fat deposit being treated.
Topical numbing is applied before every Kybella session. Pro-Nox (nitrous oxide) is also available for patients who require additional comfort support during treatment.
A note on swelling — because we believe in preparing you fully: Kybella causes an inflammatory response as it breaks down fat cells, and swelling in the treated area is expected and normal. Under the chin, this is sometimes called "bullfrog neck" — and yes, we actually show patients a photo of what this looks like so there are no surprises. Swelling can last up to 4-6 weeks. A temporary numbed sensation in the treated area can persist for up to 6 weeks. This is completely normal and resolves on its own — but it's important to plan accordingly and not schedule the treatment before a major event.
What to expect:
Topical numbing applied before every session
Pro-Nox available for additional comfort
Precise injection mapping based on your anatomy
Sessions typically completed in under an hour
Swelling expected — can last up to 4 weeks
Temporary numbness possible — can last up to 6 weeks
Gradual fat reduction over several weeks as the body clears treated cells
Multiple sessions may be recommended depending on the area and amount of fat
Why Choose Modern Aesthetics for Kybella
Kybella is a treatment where honesty matters as much as technique. At Modern Aesthetics, you'll never be sold a Kybella series if a different approach would serve you better. Sheri will assess your anatomy carefully — including the critical distinction between treatable fat and underlying muscle — and give you a clear, realistic picture of what results are achievable for your specific situation.
For patients who are good candidates, Kybella in experienced hands produces smooth, natural-looking fat reduction with no surgical recovery. For patients who aren't — you'll leave the consultation with a better understanding of your options and a referral if needed.
One patient treated for an inner thigh fat pocket recalled that the area healed smoothly, without rippling, indentations, or any surface irregularities — exactly the kind of precise, clean result that comes from careful injection mapping and experienced technique.

FAQs
-
Kybella is FDA-approved for reducing submental fat (double chin) and is also used off-label at Modern Aesthetics for small, stubborn pockets of fat in areas including bra fat, back fat, the stomach, inner thighs, and post-treatment irregularities left after CoolSculpting or liposuction. Every application is discussed thoroughly during consultation.
-
The number of sessions depends on the area being treated and the amount of fat present. Most patients require 2–4 sessions spaced several weeks apart. Your specific treatment plan will be determined during your consultation based on your anatomy and goals.
-
Not always — and we'll tell you that honestly. For patients with significant submental fullness or skin laxity concerns, under-chin liposuction is often a more effective and predictable solution. Kybella is best suited for smaller, localized pockets of fat in patients with good skin tone and elasticity. If lipo is a better fit, we're happy to discuss referrals.
-
Swelling is a normal and expected part of the Kybella process — it's a sign the treatment is working. Under the chin, this swelling can be significant (sometimes called "bullfrog neck") and can last up to 4 weeks. A temporary numbed sensation in the treated area can also persist for up to 6 weeks. We show patients photos of what to expect so there are no surprises. Plan your treatment timing accordingly and avoid scheduling before important events.
-
Topical numbing is applied before every session to minimize discomfort. Pro-Nox (nitrous oxide) is also available for patients who need additional comfort support. Most patients find the treatment manageable with these measures in place.
-
Yes — once fat cells are destroyed by Kybella and cleared by the body, they don't regenerate. However, remaining fat cells in untreated areas can still expand with weight gain, so maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results long-term.
-
The mylohyoid is a muscle that sits beneath the chin, and it can sometimes be mistaken for treatable submental fat. Accurately differentiating between the two is critical to setting realistic expectations — treating the muscle won't produce fat reduction results. This anatomical assessment is something Sheri evaluates carefully during every Kybella consultation.
-
Yes. At Modern Aesthetics, Kybella is used off-label for small pockets of fat in areas including bra fat, back fat, the stomach, inner thighs, and post-treatment irregularities from previous CoolSculpting or liposuction. These applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis during consultation.
-
Common side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, and temporary numbness in the treated area. Swelling can last up to 4 weeks and numbness up to 6 weeks — both are normal parts of the healing process. Serious complications are rare when treatment is performed by an experienced provider using precise injection mapping.
