Botox vs Dysport vs Daxxify — What's Actually the Difference?
Three FDA-approved neurotoxins. All available at Modern Aesthetics. Here's how to choose.
If you've been getting Botox for years and suddenly hear about Daxxify, or your provider mentions Dysport as an alternative, it's completely normal to wonder — are these actually different? Does it matter which one I use? And why does my provider have a preference?
The short answer: yes, they're different. And yes, it matters — but probably not in the way you think.
Here's an honest, straightforward breakdown of all three.
What They All Have in Common
Botox, Dysport, and Daxxify are all FDA-approved neurotoxins — injectable treatments that temporarily relax targeted facial muscles to smooth existing lines, prevent new ones from forming, and create a more rested, refreshed appearance.
All three work through the same basic mechanism: they block the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. Relaxed muscle equals smoother skin above it.
All three are safe, well-studied, and widely used in aesthetic medicine. And at Modern Aesthetics, all three are priced the same — so your choice is based entirely on what's right for your face, not your budget.
Botox — the Gold Standard
Botox is the original. It's been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002 and has the longest track record of any neurotoxin on the market. Decades of clinical use, thousands of studies, and millions of treatments make it the most well-understood option available.
What to expect:
Results visible within 3-7 days
Full effect at 2 weeks
Longevity typically 3-4 months
Retreatment recommended every 4-6 months
Who it's ideal for: Botox is an excellent choice for virtually anyone. It's predictable, versatile, and works beautifully across all treatment areas. If you've had great results with Botox and aren't looking to change anything — there's absolutely no reason to switch.
Dysport — The Spread Specialist
Dysport has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2009 and is one of the most popular Botox alternatives worldwide. The key difference is in its formulation — Dysport has a slightly different molecular structure that causes it to spread more naturally across larger treatment areas.
What to expect:
Results sometimes visible slightly faster than Botox — as early as 2-3 days
Full effect at 2 weeks
Longevity comparable to Botox for most patients
Retreatment recommended every 4-6 months
Who it's ideal for: Dysport tends to work particularly well in larger treatment areas like the forehead, where a more natural spread can create smoother, more even results. Some patients who feel Botox looks slightly stiff find Dysport produces a more natural movement.
One important note: Dysport is dosed differently than Botox — the unit measurements are not interchangeable. An experienced provider knows how to convert dosing appropriately. This is not something to figure out on your own.
Daxxify — The Newest Generation
Daxxify received FDA approval in 2022 and is the most exciting development in neurotoxin technology in years. Here's what makes it genuinely different:
Peptide-based formulation: Unlike Botox and Dysport which use human serum albumin as a stabilizing protein, Daxxify uses a proprietary peptide technology. This is a meaningful formulation difference — not just marketing.
Longer-lasting results in the glabella: Clinical studies and real-world results show that Daxxify produces notably longer-lasting results specifically in the glabella complex — the area between the brows commonly called the "11 lines." Many patients notice their results lasting significantly beyond the typical 3-4 month window in this area.
Comparable longevity elsewhere: In other treatment areas — forehead, crow's feet, and beyond — longevity is generally comparable to Botox and Dysport. The extended duration seems most pronounced in the glabella specifically.
What to expect:
Results visible within 3-7 days
Full effect at 2 weeks
Longevity in glabella notably longer for many patients
Retreatment timing varies by individual and area
Who it's ideal for: Daxxify is an excellent option for patients who metabolize neurotoxins quickly, those who want to explore the latest in injectable technology, or anyone specifically looking for longer-lasting results in the glabella area.
Full transparency — Daxxify is what I personally use in my own treatments. That's not a sales pitch. It's just the truth.
So Which One Should You Choose?
Honestly? Let your provider help you decide based on your specific anatomy, the areas being treated, and your history with neurotoxins.
At Modern Aesthetics, here's how we approach it:
New patients — we typically start with Botox or Dysport to establish a baseline and understand how your muscles respond
Patients who metabolize quickly — Daxxify is worth exploring, especially for the glabella
Patients happy with their current product — if it's working, we don't fix what isn't broken
Patients curious about Daxxify — we love the conversation and will give you an honest assessment of whether it makes sense for your specific goals
The most important thing isn't which product you use — it's who's using it. Placement, depth, dosage, and an understanding of how your specific muscles move are what separate natural results from results that don't look right.
