What to Look for in a Med Spa in San Jose
With so many options in the Bay Area, here's how to make sure you're choosing the right one.
Choosing a med spa is not like choosing a restaurant. A bad meal is disappointing. A bad aesthetic treatment can be difficult, expensive, and emotionally exhausting to correct.
The Bay Area med spa market is crowded. San Jose alone has dozens of options ranging from highly qualified boutique practices to pop-up injection bars staffed by providers with weekend certifications. From the outside they can look remarkably similar — same Instagram filters, same before-and-after photos, same promises of natural results.
So how do you actually tell the difference?
Here's what to look for — and what to run from.
1. Credentials That Actually Mean Something
This is the first and most important filter.
In California anyone with a medical license can legally perform injectable treatments. That includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates, and registered nurses. But a medical license alone doesn't tell you much about someone's actual training, experience, or specific expertise in aesthetics.
Here's what to look for beyond the basic license:
Clinical background in a relevant specialty. Dermatology and plastic surgery backgrounds are the gold standard for aesthetic providers. A dermatology-trained injector understands skin at a clinical level that most aesthetic providers simply don't — how it ages, how it responds to treatment, what's happening beneath the surface, and how to recognize when something isn't right before it becomes a problem.
Aesthetics-specific training from reputable institutions. Look for providers who have trained with nationally recognized programs — Allergan Medical Institute, manufacturer training programs, cadaver anatomy courses. These are meaningful credentials that require real investment of time and money and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing education.
Years of experience specifically in aesthetics. General medical experience is valuable but it's not the same as years of hands-on injectable experience. Ask how long your provider has been performing the specific treatment you're interested in.
Continuing education. The field of aesthetic medicine evolves constantly. A provider who stopped learning after their initial certification is not the same as a provider who regularly attends advanced courses, cadaver labs, and manufacturer training programs to stay at the cutting edge.
2. Who Is Actually Performing Your Treatment
This one surprises a lot of patients — and it shouldn't.
At many med spas the person who does your consultation is not the person who does your treatment. You meet with a physician or a senior provider who assesses you and builds your plan, and then a less experienced staff member performs the actual injections.
This is legal. It's common. And it's something you should ask about directly before booking.
The question to ask: "Who will actually be performing my treatment?"
If the answer is anyone other than the person you consulted with — ask about their specific credentials, training, and experience. You deserve to know exactly whose hands are touching your face.
At a boutique solo practice every treatment is performed by the same provider who consulted with you. There are no hand-offs, no surprises, and no junior staff performing treatments the senior provider assessed. That consistency is one of the most underappreciated advantages of choosing a smaller practice.
3. A Consultation That Actually Feels Like a Consultation
A good consultation should feel like a conversation — not a sales pitch.
Your provider should ask about your goals, your concerns, your medical history, and your lifestyle. They should assess your facial anatomy thoroughly — not just glance at the areas you mentioned. They should explain their recommendations clearly and in language you understand. And critically — they should tell you what they don't recommend as clearly as they tell you what they do.
Red flags in a consultation:
Feeling rushed or pressured to decide on the spot
A provider who agrees with everything you want without pushing back
Recommendations that seem to add up to a very large treatment plan on your first visit
No discussion of risks, downtime, or realistic expectations
A provider who doesn't ask about your existing filler or treatment history
A provider who tells you that you don't need something — or that less is more for your specific anatomy — is a provider you can trust. That kind of honesty is rare and valuable.
4. Before-and-After Photos that Look Like Real People
Every med spa has before-and-after photos. But not all before-and-afters are created equal.
Here's what to look for:
Consistency in photography. Same lighting, same angle, same distance for before and after. If the before photo is taken in different conditions than the after, the comparison is meaningless — and potentially misleading.
Natural results across different face shapes and skin tones. Your face is not the same as the model in the photo. A provider who consistently produces natural, balanced results across diverse patients is a provider with genuine skill and versatility.
Results that look believable. The best aesthetic work is the kind where you can't quite put your finger on what changed — you just know the person looks great. If every after photo looks dramatically different from the before, that's not necessarily a sign of skill. It might be a sign of overcorrection.
Real patients, not stock photos. This sounds obvious but it's worth checking. Your provider should be able to show you their own patient results — not manufacturer images or photos from other practices.
5. Transparency About Products and Pricing
A reputable practice uses FDA-approved, clinically backed products and is transparent about what they're using and why.
Questions worth asking:
What brands of filler and neurotoxin do you use?
Are the products purchased through authorized distributors?
Do you offer Hylenex for dissolving filler if needed?
On pricing — be appropriately skeptical of pricing that seems significantly lower than the market average. Heavily discounted injectables are often a red flag for diluted product, undertrained providers, or both. Your face is not a place to find a bargain.
This doesn't mean the most expensive option is automatically the best. But it does mean that if a price seems too good to be true — there's usually a reason.
6. Reviews That Go Beyond "Great Experience"
Google and Yelp reviews tell you a lot — but only if you read them carefully.
Generic five-star reviews that say "great experience, highly recommend" don't tell you much. What you're looking for are detailed, specific reviews that describe:
The specific treatment received
The consultation experience
How the provider communicated and educated
The actual results and how long they lasted
Whether the patient felt heard and not pressured
Reviews from patients with relevant backgrounds — medical professionals, people who have been to multiple providers — carry particular weight. If a licensed nurse or a long-time aesthetics patient specifically calls out your provider's skill and honesty, that's meaningful social proof.
What This Looks Like at Modern Aesthetics
At Modern Aesthetics in San Jose, every item on this list is something we take seriously:
Credentials: Sheri Rocha is a board-certified PA-C with nearly 9 years of experience in dermatology and medical aesthetics. She has trained alongside Allergan national trainers, completed the Allergan Master Expert Series, and regularly attends advanced anatomy and injection courses including cadaver labs.
Who performs your treatment: Sheri. Every single time. No hand-offs, no assistants, no exceptions.
Consultations: Every appointment begins with a thorough facial assessment. Sheri will tell you what she recommends — and what she doesn't. She will tell you if you have too much filler. She will tell you when waiting is the better choice. Honesty is non-negotiable here.
Products: We carry the full Juvederm collection, the RHA Collection, Skinvive, Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, Sculptra, and Hylenex for dissolving. All FDA-approved, all purchased through authorized distributors.
Reviews: We'll let our patients speak for themselves. A licensed RN who used to perform medical aesthetics herself flies in from outside the United States specifically for her treatments here. That says more than anything we could write about ourselves.
The Bottom Line
No appointment required. No commitment. No pressure.
Just two minutes, a few honest answers, and a personalized starting point built around your skin, your goals, and your real life. You deserve a provider who is as invested in your outcome as you are. In a market as crowded as the Bay Area, that means doing a little homework before you book — and knowing exactly what questions to ask.
The right provider is out there. We'd love for that to be us.
